um:ag | Art Gallery hosts the exhibition named “Faces” consisting of Gamze Kırşavoğlu's artworks, opening on January 7, 2023. The exhibition can be visited between January 7th and January 17th, 2023, every day from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the um:ag Art Gallery on the 1st floor of the Uğur Mumcu Investigative Journalism Foundation.
The artist's starting point in her artworks is based on Buddhism, which suggests that the foundation of existence consists of the combination of five aggregates (five heaps). These five aggregates: form/material/appearance, sensation, perception, mental formations, and consciousness/understanding form the basis of the concept of “self.”
Art, from the moment of our existence, is a manifestation of our journey from appearance to consciousness. In the relationship established between the artist and the artwork, it follows the same path. The physical contact initiated with the artwork culminates in a sort of manifestation of consciousness during a state of transcendence. The same applies to the viewer of the artwork. After the viewer's initial physical encounter with the artwork, the mental interaction begins. Through interpretation and aesthetic perception, coupled with consciousness, a sense of appreciation or judgment is developed. The entire process of production and consumption of the artwork occurs along this path from material/appearance to consciousness/understanding.
Gamze Kırşavoğlu aims for art enthusiasts to experience this journey from appearance to self in her artworks. She summarizes the starting point of the “Faces” exhibition as “bringing my emotions and thoughts in my mind to the canvas for the viewer.” The artist seeks traces of these emotions and thoughts in the mental relationship she establishes with her audience through her artworks.
